Industry is built on fossil fuels and dirty processes

Steel and cement are the foundation of modern infrastructure, but making them creates unavoidable CO2 emissions. Steel production requires removing oxygen from iron ore, traditionally done with coal that releases carbon dioxide. Cement production involves heating limestone, which chemically breaks down and releases CO2 directly from the rock itself.

These aren't just energy problems you can solve with solar panels. The chemistry itself needs to change. This matters enormously because steel and cement together account for about 10% of global CO2 emissions, and demand for both materials is growing rapidly as developing countries build cities and infrastructure.

Most industrial processes need heat — lots of it. Food processing, paper mills, textile manufacturing, glass making, and metal working all require temperatures ranging from warm to blazingly hot. Today, this heat almost always comes from burning natural gas, coal, or oil directly in furnaces and boilers.

Electrifying industrial heat is technically challenging because electricity is expensive compared to fossil fuels, and some processes need extremely high temperatures that are hard to reach efficiently with electricity. But industrial heat accounts for about 10% of global energy use, so solving this problem is crucial for decarbonizing the economy.

The chemical industry doesn't just burn fossil fuels for energy — it uses oil and gas as the actual building blocks for making plastics, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and thousands of other products. Petrochemicals are the foundation of modern life, from the synthetic fabrics we wear to the packaging that keeps food fresh.

This creates a fundamental challenge: even if we had unlimited clean electricity, we'd still need carbon and hydrogen atoms to build these molecules. The industry needs entirely new feedstocks and processes, not just cleaner energy. Chemicals and plastics account for about 14% of oil demand globally, and that's growing as other sectors electrify.

Every building, road, and bridge embeds enormous amounts of carbon in its materials before construction even begins. Making steel, concrete, aluminum, and glass releases massive amounts of CO2, and transporting heavy materials adds more emissions. This embodied carbon can account for 10-20% of a building's lifetime emissions, even before anyone turns on the lights.

As buildings become more energy-efficient, embodied carbon becomes a bigger share of their total impact. The construction industry is enormous — concrete alone is the most-used material on Earth after water — so changing how we build could dramatically reduce global emissions.

Our economy is built on a take-make-waste model: extract raw materials, make products, use them briefly, then throw them away. This linear approach wastes enormous amounts of materials and energy while creating mountains of waste. Most products are designed to be cheap and disposable rather than durable and repairable.

A circular economy keeps materials in use as long as possible, then recovers and regenerates them at the end of their service life. This requires fundamentally rethinking how we design, make, and use products. The potential is enormous — circular economy approaches could reduce global emissions by 45% while creating new business opportunities and reducing waste.

Industrial activity has contaminated vast areas of land and water with toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and other pollutants. Legacy contamination from decades of industrial activity continues to threaten human health and ecosystems. Current industrial processes still release pollutants, even when they comply with regulations.

Cleaning up this contamination and preventing future pollution requires both better industrial processes and active remediation of damaged sites. This isn't just an environmental issue — contaminated land can't be used for housing or agriculture, and polluted water threatens public health. The scale is enormous, with millions of contaminated sites worldwide.
