Communities aren't ready for what's coming

Most communities are making critical decisions about housing, infrastructure, and economic development without understanding their future climate risks. They know the climate is changing, but they don't know how it will change in their specific location, or when those changes will hit.

Global climate models are too broad to be useful for local planning. A city needs to know which streets will flood in a 100-year storm, not just that sea levels are rising. A farmer needs to know how rainfall patterns will shift in their county, not just that droughts are becoming more common. This translation from global science to local action is where most communities get stuck.

Heat waves are now the deadliest weather-related hazard in many countries, killing more people than hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes combined. Cities are particularly vulnerable because concrete and asphalt create urban heat islands that can be 10-15°F hotter than surrounding areas.

The people most at risk — elderly residents, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning — often have the least resources to protect themselves. As heat waves become more frequent and intense, communities need new ways to identify hot spots, cool down dangerous areas, and protect vulnerable populations before heat becomes lethal.

Sea level rise and stronger storms are putting millions of coastal residents at risk. What used to be rare flooding events are becoming routine, and storm surges are reaching farther inland than ever before. Many coastal communities were built assuming stable sea levels and predictable storm patterns that no longer exist.

The challenge isn't just protecting against today's risks, but preparing for decades of continued sea level rise and potentially more intense hurricanes. Some areas may need to be abandoned entirely, while others can be protected with the right investments. Communities need tools to understand their options and make difficult decisions about their future.

Wildfires are becoming larger, more intense, and more unpredictable as climate change creates hotter, drier conditions. Areas that rarely burned in the past are now seeing devastating fires, and traditional fire seasons are extending year-round in many regions.

The challenge is that fire moves fast — often faster than people can evacuate. Communities need systems that can detect fires when they're still small, predict where they're likely to spread, and help residents prepare their homes and neighborhoods to survive fire exposure. The old approach of simply fighting fires after they start is no longer sufficient.

Protecting communities from climate change requires massive upfront investments — in flood barriers, cooling systems, fire-resistant infrastructure, and early warning systems. But most communities, especially those at highest risk, don't have the money to pay for these protections.

Traditional insurance and financing systems weren't designed for the scale and speed of climate change. Insurance companies are pulling out of high-risk areas, banks are reluctant to finance vulnerable properties, and government disaster aid typically comes only after damage has already occurred. Communities need new financial tools that can fund protection before disasters strike and spread the costs fairly across society.
